Architectural designs that contribute to knowledge are those that lead to new perceptions, to new material forms and processes, to the development of new architectural and urban systems, to new constructs that advance the existing understanding and quality of the built environment. The form in which the Dissertation is presented includes text and illustration and original and unique three-dimensional design.

Design research is usually situated in one of the three main fields of investigation in Emergent Technologies and Design:

1. Active Material Systems and Advanced Fabrication

2. Natural Ecological Systems Design

3. Urban Ecological Design

Reconfigurable Mold for Double Curved Panels

Parametrically varying double curved panels can enhance structural stiffness and express a high aesthetic value. However, fabricating many uniquely shaped double curved panels is justifiable within only the most exclusive budgets. This work explores new efficient methods of producing doubly curved concrete panels by utilizing a reusable and quickly reconfigurable moulding system.

Water InSite

We propose an urban resilient system which is able to perform under critical coastal flooding condition. By shaping the landscape, the water which reaches the record level is slowed down, redirected and detered from the land. The urban settlement is designed in order to interact with and take advantage of the water.

Responsive Growth System

Through self-organisation, informal settlements respond to changes in population and climate. However, poor construction methods deter their built spatial and structural quality. Focusing on the informal settlement of Dharavi, Mumbai, the goal is to design a responsive growth system. Informed by the existing social structure and climate, through the implementation of a low-cost low-tech material system from locally sourced cardboard, the system's growth will improve spatial quality, enhancing the symbiotic relationship with the formal city.

Green Undergrounds

Focusing on regions of hot-arid climate, this research aims to develop an integrated Urban Farming system to: provide food locally, improve micro climate, enhance social environments and improve urban quality.

Considering the location of the project, the form and morphology of the farms will be driven by the local urban configuration and morphology as well as production cycle, existing and proposed transportation and water networks and other social logics.

TULOU (RE)iterate

This thesis looks at a new earth building typology for rural settings in South East China, shifting the attention from the big urban centres to the village. The research will develop an evolutionary computational model, which generates an adaptive topology in relation to material properties, building physics, topography and social structure. Material prototypes will be developed as the basis for the new building type, challenging structural performance, constructibility and material efficiency. The model will then be systemically distributed on an urban scale, in relation to a specific agricultural context and infrastructure.

General Flow

The thesis explores the possibility of densifying an existing urban tissue in Istanbul, Turkey, by using a comprehensive urban infill strategy. The local cultural, environmental and spatial characteristics are abstracted and quantified in order to propose a new model for densification, based on information, which grows within the existing negative space.

Adaptable Morphogenesis

The design proposal will focus on the spread phenomena of informal rooftop villages in the high density district of Sham Shui Po, in Hong Kong, China, and translating its spatial and cultural identity into a set of rules and code for densification. The main target will be to develop an urban intelligence in the long term by improving the quality of the existing urban spaces through the emergence of public green areas, socio-cultural amenities integrated in the existing building morphologies, and the improvement of local environmental conditions, such as natural wind ventilation and water treatment, at different operational scales.

Adaptable Morphogenesis

The well-being of urban population will be achieved by creating a vivid cityscape within coexistence of multiple functions that allows social organisations and through the integration between built environment and greenery.
