The research seeks to develop a system that consists of a family of parts for adaptive sport infrastructure to be deployable within the urban fabric. The research is focused on spatial and material prototypes for movement-based sporting events – F1 racing in particular. We developed a distributed infrastructure that can be embedded in an opportunistic response to the specific urban conditions identified on the site. Both local and global systems were created through the embedding of programmatic, structural and organisational design intelligence. A prototype was developed using the proposed London Grand Prix circuit as a test site.
Spaces for intervention and adaptation within the system were mapped and populated with planes of activity, which are evaluated against a variety of requirements within our generative framework. Viewing plane configuration was developed as a parametric system defined with respect to targets for viewing zones. These have been evaluated for qualitative and quantitative criteria, using an evolutionary algorithm. Subsequently configurations were selected based on the formal and spatial aspects each configuration as well as the efficiency of its structural support skeleton. These were then approximated as linkages – of nodes & bars – to study their capacities for transformation from flat configurations. A parallel research on composites membranes with variable rigidity investigated the skinning of such a transformable structure.
At the global organisational level, an aggregation process was developed that allows for these units to be intelligently deployed creating networks based on feedback and contextual evaluation.
